Filed under: Uncategorized — junegillam @ 9:43 pm

Jimmy Graben, a student at Fresno State University and Sports Editor of the Collegian Student Paper, won the first $2,500 Jerry Gillam Scholarship. In his speech, Graben noted that based on what he’d learned so far about Gillam, they would likely have gotten along well and that he hopes to live up the the Gillam legacy in his future career in journalism.

Here are some photos taken at the Sacramento Press Club lunch, held at the Sterling Hotel’s Chanterelle Banquet Room.

  3. Thank you June for setting up this blog and passing on the great news about Jimmy. I’m very grateful to the Sacramento Press Club for making this scholarship possible. It’s a very touching tribute to a very special man who believed in educating your mind and keeping your heart open.

    • It’s fulfilling to provide a way for people to continue to remember your dad, Karen, and the vital impact he had on so many of us. You phrased well his belief in–“educating your mind and keeping your heart open.”

  4. We were all very touched by the love and admiration for Jerry that filled the room. It was an honor and a surprise to be able to meet June and to receive all the information about this man for whom the scholarship was named. We have read it all, and now we feel like we have met Jerry, the legend and the man. With his passing being so recent, we do want to take time to express our condolences to you and our encouragement in the hope that you and we have through our common faith. Thank you so much for the literature, for taking time to meet us, and for the opportunity at the scholarship.
