Congratulations to Madeleine Thomas, shown on the right, who is originally from Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from the University of Delaware with her bachelor’s degree. She spent two years in Washington D.C. working for a nonprofit that is involved in animal conservation. That’s where she learned about science writing and developed a passion for melding science and humanity in her writing. Currently she is in the journalism master’s degree program at UC Berkeley, where she is specializing in health and underserved populations (topics like food deserts in inner cities where fresh fruit is not available and toxic environments in poor communities such as Kettlemen City). She is also interested in agriculture as a topic. She is planning to do her thesis on some health aspect in the Central Valley, and her long-term aspiration is to be a reporter bringing these issues to the light of day.
